Business Community Applauds Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act
“‘Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service says legislation would keep USPS solvent & serving Americans through COVID-19 pandemic.”
Washington, D.C. (July 2, 2020) – The Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, an organization of public and private companies, trade associations and other industry groups which rely on the U.S. Postal Service to do business, applauded today’s introduction of the Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act by Sens. Susan Collins (R-ME) and Dianne Feinstein (D-Cali.).
Art Sackler, manager of the Coalition for a 21st Century Postal Service, released the following statement on behalf of the coalition’s members:
“Because the U.S. Postal Service has kept delivering through the pandemic, it’s easy to overlook that the economic ramifications of COVID-19 ripped through it, leading to a sharp decline in business-related mail volume and a projected loss that could still compromise or even destroy our postal system within the next 12 months.
“USPS employees are on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic as they continue to power the only delivery service that goes to every person in the country, from the densest cities to the most remote addresses. They, and the millions of American families and businesses relying on them, deserve the support provided by the Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act.
“The Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act is a measured, balanced effort to provide the Postal Service with the assistance it needs to remain fully functional, update its borrowing authority so that funds under the CARES Act are provided without strings attached, and direct a restructuring plan to ensure solvency in the long term.
“Without the Postal Service Emergency Assistance Act, recovering businesses large and small could lose affordable, reliable shipment options when they need it most, and more importantly, rural Americans could lose a lifeline.”
